What Has Been Banging Around In My Head Today

Homeostasis, and stability as a whole, is a process of constant change.

I think the above is exhausting but true. I think. It is a subject that was brought up in my take-home final that I've been working on for five hours now. Thought I'd take a break and either write something or shoot myself. Decided to write something. So, even if I'm wrong about homeostasis, this was a very adaptive blog entry.

I am in over my head with finals. I will post a bit irregularly until next Wednesday, at which point I am free from the shackles of the freedom to be educated.

Doesn't homeostasis imply a cyclicity to nature? That if one waits long enough conditions return to ideal.

I don't think that Homeostasis represents the ideal but rather the normal, the average - right?
If things are working as they should they are BORING; "nothing to see here folks, move along." THAT'S homeostasis, yes? Or is the ideal and the average the same thing here.

I was just thinking about how it applies to work, or business, and that homeostasis is what you simultaneously wish for and dread. It's hard work keeping an even keel, but without diversity & change how can one excel?

Oh, wait - I just changed my pants!

Dictionary.com defines homeostasis as "The ability or tendency of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes."

So I suppose homeostasis is not the ideal or the equilibrium, but the process of trying to find the balance. And I guess I should have looked that up first, as my original statement was pretty close to just defining it. Way to do my research. Woo woo.

So Dean: Homeostasis is nature's ability to return to ideal if you wait long enough.

Kevin: Amen. Nope, changed my mind: Blessed Be.

Coffeesnob: At first I was going to say that I didn't think the ideal and the average are the same, because if they were then the ideal would happen a lot more than it does. But now I think that they are the same: if the pendulum (how the hell do you spell that?) swings back and forth but never stops to take a break in the ideal middle, then the average of its' trips back and forth ends up being the middle, even though it is rarely there. Hmmmmmm.....

And I think that diversity and change are a necessary part of the process of keeping an even keel; they are not opposed to even keelness, even if those in favor of the status quo tell you they are. I would argue that trying to keep things the same throws off balance and prohibits even keelness.

If you want to use the analogy on running a business: even keelness comes from dealing with conflict and unexpected situations that constantly come up, throwing you off one way or the other. Your ability to adequately handle those situations, people, problems, things leads to a state of equilibrium that is constantly in need of your attention, adaptation, and problem solving. If it gets boring, something is wrong with your business. My last year or so working at the sandwich shop was boring because THERE WAS NO BUSINESS and therefore no problems to attend to. The ideal is proficient adaptation, not a lack of problems and challenges.

And I thought I was just throwing out a lil ol somethin somethin, and you all made my head expand. THANKS!

Wait, I just changed my...I'M NOT WEARING ANY PANTS!
