Note that the Pledge of Allegiance did not yet contain the phrase "under God".

When was "under God" added? Why? Which God?

"Under God" was added in 1954, at the height of the Cold War. When Eisenhower, a not-very-religious man wanted to run for president, his advisors told him he had to get a good Christian image. He joined a church and heard a sermon about how our pledge of allegiance is no better than a Communist pledge because it does not make us look like the good, God-fearing people that we are. He then grabbed the opportunity for good press, pressured seventeen senators into putting the change through, and took credit for making it clear how un-Communist the American people are.

Religion flourished in the 1950's (more bibles sold in the year 1952 than any other year in history) because if you didn't go to church you might be an athiest, and if you're an athiest you must be a Commie. If a committe such as the House Un-American Activities Commitee even suggested that you might be a Commie, you lost your job, couldn't find another job and were shunned by your community. Thus the Christianization of the country which has now "rebounded" from the less religious 60's 70's and 80's, and come back as hard-core Evangelicalism since the 90's. Many of the major Evangelical churches that support Bush today were founded in the mid-50's.

Can you tell I'm taking "American History Since 1945" right now? I've been re-watching all the old "Patriotism" Educational Archive videos I have from the 40's and 50's.

I can feel the Terra Americana crumbling from beneath my feet right now.

Now that I've got me a mini Constitution on the way I'd better memorize it - in case they burn it.
-------
I'm not God fearing. God is in each of us and I'm pretty fond of most people. Does that make me a Commie?

Can't be a commie if you believe in god. Christianity is simply proof of un-commie-ness. But other god-fearing people fall somewhere between Christians and Commies. So you're alright.

ALTHOUGH: you may still be a terrorist because terrorists believe in god too.
